Troubleshooting Your Furnace Breakdown: 4 Tips

by Amy Henry

When your furnace breaks down, it can be a little bit scary, especially when it's the middle of winter. Those cold nights can get really cold when you don't have any heat in your home. No heat can also cause other issues with your home, such as frozen pipes, which can lead to burst pipes and water damage in your home. If you end up with these problems, it can be costly to repair, not to mention the cost to repair your furnace. Read on for a few troubleshooting tips to help you repair your furnace.

1. Change The Thermostat Temperature

Your thermostat tells your furnace what temperature it needs to be. If your thermostat isn't working properly, it isn't going to give your furnace the right information, which is not going to allow your furnace to run properly. Make an adjustment to the thermostat to see if the furnace turns on. If your thermostat is digital and the readout isn't lit up, or you cannot read it, check the batteries and the wiring at the back. Change the batteries or tighten the wiring. Adjust the thermostat again and listen for your furnace to turn on.

2. Purchase A New Furnace Filter

Your air filter in your HVAC system can get clogged with dust and other debris, which is going to block the flow of air to your system. If your system doesn't get enough air, it isn't going to be able to run at all. If your furnace isn't running at all, change the furnace filter and click the reset button on your furnace. Be sure the air filter is changed every other month to prevent a breakdown of your furnace.

3. Open Your Air Vents

If your furnace is running, but it doesn't feel like it's heating your entire home, you should check that all of the air vents are open in your home. Also, make sure that all of the doors in your home are open to ensure there is a proper flow of air to your entire home.

4. Clean Your System

Your furnace may have stopped working because it is too dirty to run. Just like your air filter can cause your furnace to stop working, a dirty system can also cause a problem for you. If your system is dirty, you need to clean it out. Turn off the power to your furnace and use a shop vacuum to clean out your furnace system. Turn the power back on and hit the reset button on the system.

If your furnace stopped working, or just isn't working as it should, and you aren't able to troubleshoot the repair yourself, hire professional heating repair services to repair your furnace for you.
