If you are having problems with your toilet backing up and not flushing, you may think that it's just a small problem with a clog and that you can plunge it away or use drain cleaner to get rid of it, but if you notice that you have stuff backing up into your bathtub or bathroom sink as well, it could be that you have larger problems. It could be that you have a clog in your sewer main line, and that is a whole other kettle of fish. That can end up being a really expensive repair for you to have to deal with. So what can you do to deal with it?
Find Your Sewer Line Cleanout
The cleanout drains are usually quite near to your house, on the outside, but it might be in your driveway. They are generally flat to the ground, or maybe sticking up just a little bit. You may also have one that is attached to the side of your house. That kind of cleanout drain is usually raised and extended up higher.
Open it Up
Once you have found it, you are going to have to open it up. You are going to need to have a big pipe wrench or monkey wrench to do that. You are also going to want to take a minute to use some protective gear before you do anything. You should have some work gloves because you can end up tearing up your hands on the wrench, and you might want to have some kind of eye protection. You should also wear closed shoes, and if you have a pair of closed shoes that you are thinking of getting rid of, this might be a good time to do that. They may get stuff on them that you don't want to think about, and being able to just trash them will be a good thing. Or, you might want to get a cheap pair of rubber boots, because when you open the cleanout, you are going to get all kinds of gunk pouring out.
Run the Auger Down
You want to go to a home improvement store or equipment rental store and rent one of the big augers. These are generally on a large reel that you feed down into your cleanout until it starts finding the clog and breaks it up. Once it's broken up, then you will need to hose off the auger as you are reeling it back in so that you can get rid of whatever detritus is in the pipe.
If you don't feel up to cleaning your sewer mainline, you can always call a residential plumbing service to come and do it for you. They will have the training and the equipment to get it down quickly and easily.Share
